President’s Office
“What makes a liberal arts education in the Carthage mold so powerful is that students are able to bring the skills and capacities they learn from lots of disciplines together, and also try those out, so that they’re fully prepared for what’s going to come next.” — President John Swallow
John R. Swallow, a scholar with more than 25 years of teaching, research, and leadership experience at small liberal arts colleges, became the 24th president of Carthage College in July 2017.
Since taking office, he has developed comprehensive strategies to guide the College’s work on several fronts. President Swallow has overseen the launches of The Aspire Program™ for career development, several academic programs that align with student interest, and three new NCAA Division III sports.
Similarly, he has worked to ensure an equitable and inclusive educational environment. Last year, for the first time, faculty and staff eliminated equity gaps in first to second semester retention, which reached an all-time high and demonstrated no gaps by race or income (as defined by Pell status).
Emphasizing community partnerships, President Swallow laid out an overarching strategic framework to inform Carthage’s decision-making in the coming years as demographic changes make higher education increasingly competitive.
